How to use the hang tag template

Three steps take a tag from a blank size to a printed sheet, and the checks keep every word clear of the hole.

Hole 1/8 in

A hang tag template with the hole and the cut built in

The tag is a real dieline, not a rectangle with a picture on it, so every file and check uses the same shape.

Three sizes, four tag shapes, one string hole

The 2 x 3.5 in tag is first, in a clipped or a round corner version, with a 2 x 2 in and a 1.5 x 3 in tag beside it. The 1/8 in hole is centered and 1/4 in below the top edge, and its diameter and distance from the top are adjustable, so a thin string or a heavier tie gets the hole it needs.

Clipped, round or square corners

The usual clipped corner cuts both top corners at 45 degrees, with a 1/4 in leg on the 2 in tag and 3/16 in on the 1.5 in tag. Round corners use a 1/8 in radius, and square corners suit a plain industrial look. The corner goes into the cut line, the preview and every file.

A sheet that fits the page

The print panel starts on a custom sheet fitted to the tag size with 1/4 in margins and 1/8 in gaps: 6 tags on Letter for the 2 x 3.5 in tag, 9 on A4, and 15 of the 2 x 2 in tag on either page. A new tag size lays the sheet out again, and the line under the page size says how many tags fit.

A barcode for the till

A UPC-A barcode sits on the starter at the 80% minimum retail size, quiet zones inside the cut, so a shop can scan the tag at the counter. The barcode engine adds the check digit, the checks flag a symbol that is too small or crowded, and the bars stay exact.

Files for home and for a print shop

The single tag downloads as a vector PDF or an SVG, the sheet PDF places every tag on Letter or A4, and the PNG is 300 dpi. With the cut line on, the PDF carries the tag outline and the hole as a CutContour spot color on its own layer, and the SVG draws the same line.

What a hang tag carries

A hang tag is the small card tied to a product: a garment, a bag, a candle or a piece of jewelry. It tells the shopper the brand, the product name, the price and the size, and often the material or care. For a shop it is also a sales tool at the counter and a piece of branding that leaves with the customer.

The back is useful too: care tips for the garment, alongside the permanent care label sewn into it, a batch number for a candle or a soap, a line about the maker, or a QR code for a care page. This hang tag template starts from a brand line, a product name, a price, a size and a UPC-A barcode, and every one can be replaced.

The sizes a hang tag comes in

The common sizes are 2 x 3.5 in, 2 x 2 in and 1.5 x 3 in, with larger 2.5 x 4 in tags for a coat or a bag on the gift tag template page. The 2 x 3.5 in tag is the usual one because it is about the size of a business card: brand, product name, price, size and barcode all read at a glance without crowding.

A smaller tag suits small goods. The 2 x 2 in square fits a ring, a pair of earrings or a sample bottle, and the 1.5 x 3 in tag leaves room for a long product name on a narrow item. In every case this hang tag template keeps the hole centered, and the text area starts below it.

Where the hole goes and how big it is

Common practice is a 1/8 in (3.2 mm) hole for a string or a thin tie, its center about 1/4 in (6.35 mm) below the top edge and centered across the width. That leaves card above the hole for the string to pull against without tearing, and room below it for the brand and the price. A heavier tie needs a larger hole.

Keep the hole clear. It is punched out of the finished tag, so a word or a barcode that reaches it would be cut away or sit on a weak edge. The label maker draws the hole in the cut line and keeps a safe margin around it, and the checks warn when text, a picture or a barcode comes too close.

The price tag template for a shop

A price tag template does more than show a number. In a small shop the tag is often the only place the price is written, so it must read from the counter and stay put. Set the price in the largest type, keep the brand and the product name above it, and put the size and the barcode below.

For a run of products the barcode saves time at the till: a UPC-A number on the tag scans like a product barcode, and the label maker adds the check digit and draws the symbol at a retail size. The browser autosave keeps the design for the next run, so a second print needs no editing.

The clothing tag template and its paper

A clothing tag template is usually printed on card stock of about 250 to 350 gsm (roughly 90 to 130 lb cover), heavy enough to hang straight and light enough to cut with scissors or a craft knife. Matte stock takes ink well and feels good; coated stock prints sharper. A test print on plain paper shows the layout first.

For a clothing tag template, print at 100% or Actual size, never Fit to page, or the tag comes out small and the hole drifts on the sheet. Let the ink dry, cut along the outline, and punch the hole with a 1/8 in punch or a craft knife. Cut the clipped corners along the outline with scissors or a cutting machine; a corner rounder makes round corners.

The hang tag dieline for a print shop

A hang tag dieline is the outline the tag is cut to, with the hole and the corners included. A print shop wants the cut line on its own layer or as a spot color, and the artwork running past it by the bleed. This hang tag dieline PDF does both, with a CutContour line on a separate layer.

For a print shop, download the single tag PDF rather than the sheet PDF: the shop imposes many tags on its own press sheet and cuts them with its own die. Keep the cut line on and the spot color name as it is. The SVG holds the same outline for a cutting machine.

Designing the tag art with AI

The label maker has a Design with AI button, and the tag page uses it like any other label: describe the look for the brand, pick one to four results, and the AI works in two ways, keeping your layout and restyling it or painting the background art alone. A paper texture or a soft color field works well behind a tag, because the words and the barcode stay on top.

That is the quickest way to a designed tag without a design app. Start from the hang tag template, place the brand, the price and the barcode, then let the AI make the art behind them. The tag stays a working file: change the size, the corners or the hole afterwards.

Open the hang tag template

What size is a standard hang tag?

2 x 3.5 in, about the size of a business card. The page also offers 2 x 2 in and 1.5 x 3 in tags, and the 2 x 3.5 in tag with round corners.

How big should the hole be, and where does it go?

A 1/8 in hole with its center about 1/4 in below the top edge is common practice. The page sets that by default and lets you change both.

Can I print a hang tag template at home?

Yes. Print a sheet on Letter or A4 card stock at 100% or Actual size, cut along the outlines, and punch the holes. The 2 x 3.5 in tag gives 6 on Letter and 9 on A4.

What card stock should I use for a price tag template?

About 250 to 350 gsm (90 to 130 lb cover) holds its shape on a string and still cuts with scissors or a craft knife. A matte stock takes ink well; a coated one prints sharper.

How many tags fit on one page?

Six 2 x 3.5 in tags on Letter and nine on A4 at the standard margins. The 2 x 2 in tag fits 15 on either page, and the 1.5 x 3 in tag fits 15 on Letter and 12 on A4.

Can I put a barcode on the tag?

Yes. A UPC-A barcode is on the starter, and the label maker adds any UPC-A, EAN-13, UPC-E, EAN-8, Code 128 or QR code, with the check digit added.

Does the hang tag dieline include the hole and the cut corners?

Yes. With the cut line on, the PDF carries the tag outline and the hole as a CutContour spot color on its own layer, and the SVG draws the same outline.

Is the hang tag template free?

Yes. The label maker, every tag size, the sheet and the PDF, SVG and PNG files are free, with no signup and no watermark. Only Design with AI uses credits.

Can I design the tag art with AI?

Yes. Design with AI in the label maker makes a background for the tag from a short description, and the words, the price and the barcode stay on top and stay editable.

Will my tag be saved for the next print run?

The page keeps its own autosave in this browser, and the design can be saved to your account or as a project file. Another label page never replaces it.
