How to use the name label template

Three steps turn a list of names into a sheet of labels, and this name label template checks the label as you go.

A name label template made for a list

The square label, the list mode and the simple type are chosen for names that have to be quick to read.

The exact 22806 grid

Avery 22806 compatible sheets hold 12 labels of 2 x 2 in, 3 columns and 4 rows, with columns 2 5/8 in apart and rows 2 7/12 in apart. The grid sits 5/8 in from every page edge, and the same layout is sold as 22816.

One name, one label

List mode takes one entry per label, so a class list, a guest list or a shelf list becomes a printed sheet in one pass. The name is one text element: change the font, size, color or alignment and every label follows, and the list repeats when the sheet has spare positions.

Large type on a square label

A 2 x 2 in label holds a first name at a size that reads across a room, and a full name or a name with a class still fits at a comfortable size. The starter uses 14 pt bold type, the checks warn below 6 pt, and the safe area keeps the name off the label edge.

Print files and checks

The Sheet PDF is vector at actual size, the single label PDF and SVG outline the text, the PNG is 300 dpi and the Cricut file cuts around the square. The checks flag small text, a crowded barcode, a picture under 300 dpi or anything outside the safe area.

What a name label template is

A name label template is a page of labels made for a person’s name: a child’s lunch box, a school folder, a water bottle, a camp bag, an event badge or a storage bin. This page opens a name label template on a 2 x 2 in label and fills a US Letter sheet with 12 of them, so a class list or a guest list becomes one printed page.

It is a working page, not a download: the label maker lets you type the sample, paste a list for one name per label, choose a font and color, and print or download the sheet. Nothing is uploaded, and the PDF, SVG and PNG files are free with no account.

The 22806 sheet: 12 labels of 2 x 2 in

Each label on the 22806 layout is 2 x 2 in (about 50.8 mm square). Three columns and four rows fill a US Letter page with 12 labels. The columns are 2 5/8 in apart, which leaves a 5/8 in gap between them, and the rows are 2 7/12 in apart, which leaves a slightly smaller gap of 7/12 in.

The grid is centred, with 5/8 in from the left, right, top and bottom page edges. The label corners are square. Avery numbers are compatibility names on this page; the layout is made to fit the sheet, and packs sold as 22816 share it.

A list of names on one sheet

A sheet of 12 is usually 12 different names, not 12 copies of one. Set the name text to List and paste the names with one per line. The first name goes on the first label, the second on the second, and the list repeats only when the sheet has more labels than names, which helps with a short list for a large run.

The name stays one text element, so a font, size or alignment change applies to every label at once. For a second line, such as a class name or a phone number, add another text element and set it to its own list when it changes per person, or leave it the same on every label when it does not.

What survives a dishwasher or a backpack

A paper label on a lunch box that goes through a dishwasher will usually lift at the edges, and a label on the outside of a backpack rubs against straps and shelves. The label material and the ink decide how well a name label lasts: waterproof sheets made for dishwashers and outdoor use resist water, while ordinary paper sheets are best on dry, indoor items such as folders and bins.

For a lunch box or a water bottle, apply the label to a clean, dry, smooth surface, press it from the middle out and let it set before washing. A waterproof sheet and a laser printer give the most water resistance; with an inkjet printer, let the ink dry fully and cover the label with clear tape or a laminate film for extra protection. When an item is washed every day, a label inside the lid or a name written under the base may last longer than one on the outside. Test one label on a similar item before printing a whole set.

Where printable name labels help

Printable name labels do three jobs at once: they keep a child’s things out of the lost and found, they make a lunch box or a water bottle easy to spot, and they let a guest at an event start a conversation without a printed badge. A 2 x 2 in label is large enough for a first name at reading distance and small enough for a folder, a pencil case or a bin.

For storage, the same square label from this name label template works on the end of a box, a shelf edge or a drawer front. For an event, print a list of first names or full names, one per label, and keep the sheet with the sign-in table. For a class, print the list once and peel the labels, or cut a plain paper printout apart between the labels.

Printing the sheet at actual size

Choose 100% or Actual size in the print dialog, never Fit to page or Scale to fit. A page scaled a few percent drifts further with every row and the bottom labels miss the paper. Print the test page on plain paper first: it draws the label outlines and a 1 in and 25 mm square, so you can hold it against a blank sheet and check the fit before using labels.

If the outlines are shifted the same way all over the sheet, measure the shift, enter the printer offset and print the test page again. The Sheet PDF places all 12 labels on a Letter page, and the single label PDF, SVG, PNG and Cricut file are there for a print shop, a cutting machine or a design app.

Name label template FAQ

More questions? The Checks tab in the label maker explains every warning.

Open the name label template

What size is the name label template?

Each label is 2 x 2 in, with 12 labels on a US Letter sheet in 3 columns and 4 rows.

Which other sheet numbers fit this layout?

22816 shares the 2 x 2 in label and the same grid. Other brands can share the label size but use different margins, so measure those and choose Custom sheet.

Can each label have a different name?

Yes. Set the name text to List and paste one name per line. The first name goes on the first label, and the list continues down the sheet.

Are printable name labels free?

Yes. The label maker, every sheet, the test page and the PDF, SVG, PNG and Cricut files are free, with no signup and no watermark. Only Design with AI uses credits.

Will the label survive a dishwasher?

That depends on the label sheet and the printer. Waterproof sheets and laser toner last best; paper labels on a lunch box usually lift in a dishwasher. Apply to a clean, dry surface, let the label set, and test one before doing the whole set.

Will it stay on a backpack?

A label on the outside of a backpack rubs against straps and shelves. A waterproof label on a hard, smooth part of the bag, or a label inside the bag or on a luggage tag, lasts longer than paper on fabric.

What should I put on a school name label?

A first name and a last initial are enough for most school things, and a full name helps on a shared item. Keep the type large and leave the extra line for a class or a phone number.

What font size works on a 2 x 2 in label?

About 14 pt for one name, or 10 to 12 pt for a name plus a second line on this name label template. The checks warn under 6 pt, and the preview shows the type at its printed size.

Can I reuse the name list next year?

The page keeps its own autosave in this browser, and the design can be saved to your account or as a project file. A visit to another label page does not replace this page’s saved design.

Is this page affiliated with Avery?

No. Avery is a trademark of its owner; this tool is not affiliated with Avery, and the 22806 layout is made to fit the sheet.
