How to make a food label in three steps

Type the recipe once; the food label maker writes the required text and keeps the layout legal as you design.

A food label generator that knows the rules

Most free tools give you an empty template. This one fills it in from your recipe and tells you what the label still needs.

Ingredient list done right

Ingredients go heaviest first, sub-ingredients in parentheses, and small ones can close the list after "Contains 2% or less of". Copy the text or place it on the label.

Allergens checked against FDA's 2025 guidance

Milk, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts, soy and sesame, with nuts and seafood named by kind. Peanut butter is peanut, cocoa butter is not milk, and coconut stays off the "Contains" line.

Cottage food statements by state

Rules for all 50 states and DC: each statement in its exact current wording and minimum type size, with a link to its source and the date it was checked.

Nutrition Facts on the same label

Make the Nutrition Facts in our nutrition label generator and add them here as a vector panel, or choose the small business exemption when it applies.

Type that passes inspection

Every check measures the real letters: 1/16 in for the ingredient list and address, net weight by the size of the label, the product name bold.

Florida statement at 10 pt, no major allergens.

Illinois: the full statement, the date made and the registration number.

What goes on a food label?

A packaged food sold in the US needs the product name and the net quantity on the front, and an ingredient list, the major food allergens, the name and address of the maker or seller, and usually Nutrition Facts on the front or the panel to its right (21 CFR 101.2).

Cottage foods made at home add the statement your state requires. The food label maker checks each part and tells you what is still missing.

How to write an ingredient list

List every ingredient by its common name, heaviest first (21 CFR 101.4). For an ingredient with its own ingredients, like chocolate chips, either name it and put its ingredients in parentheses, or list those ingredients in the main list in their place.

Ingredients at 2% or less may close the list after "Contains 2% or less of". Certified colors are named one by one, such as Red 40, and preservatives say what they do. With amounts filled in, the ingredient label maker puts them in order for you.

How to label allergens

The nine major food allergens are milk, egg, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts, soybeans and sesame. Declare them in a "Contains" line right after the ingredients, at least as large as the list, or in parentheses in the list, such as "whey (milk)".

Name tree nuts, fish and shellfish by kind: "Contains: Almond, Shrimp", never "tree nuts". Since FDA's January 2025 guidance, only 12 tree nuts count, and coconut is not one of them. A "may contain" line must be true and not repeat a declared allergen.

Cottage food labels by state

Most states let you sell some foods made in a home kitchen if the label carries their statement, word for word. Texas changed its wording in September 2025, Georgia in July 2025, and California asks for 12 pt type plus your permit number and county.

This food label maker has the current rules for all 50 states and DC, with the source of each. For a label laid out around your state's rules, with a checklist of what it asks for, use the cottage food label maker. Rules change, so check your state's page before you print a large batch.

Do you need Nutrition Facts?

Most packaged foods do. A business selling directly to consumers can skip them if those sales are not more than $500,000 a year, or its food sales to consumers not more than $50,000 (21 CFR 101.9(j)(1)). A low volume product, from a firm with fewer than 100 full-time employees selling fewer than 100,000 units of it a year, can too, usually after a notice to FDA (101.9(j)(18)). Either way the label must make no nutrient claims such as "low fat" or "sugar free".

If you need them, make them in the nutrition label generator and add them to this label in one click.

Type size and placement

Required information needs letters at least 1/16 in high, measured on the lowercase o (21 CFR 101.2). The net weight goes in the bottom 30% of the front, bold, at a height set by the size of the front panel.

Our checks measure the letters in the actual font, so 7 pt text that looks fine on screen is flagged before it reaches the printer.

Open the food label maker

Is this food label maker free?

Yes. Every template, check and download is free, with no signup and no watermark, and you can sell the products you label.

Does the food label generator find allergens by itself?

It reads every ingredient and sub-ingredient name and marks the nine major allergens, with tree nuts and seafood named by kind. Anything that depends on the source, like lecithin, is shown for you to decide, and natural flavors come with a reminder to ask your supplier.

Can I use it as an ingredient label maker only?

Yes. Enter the ingredients and copy the finished list and "Contains" line, or place just those on a small label for the back of your package.

Which states' cottage food statements are included?

All 50 states and the District of Columbia, read from the law or the state's own page in October 2026. Most have a statement, copied word for word; Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Pennsylvania have none. The cottage food label maker builds the whole label around your state.

Can I add Nutrition Facts?

Yes. Make them in the free nutrition label generator, then add them here; they stay vector and keep FDA type sizes.

How do I print the labels?

Pick an Avery sheet, print the test page on plain paper at 100% or Actual size, check it against a label sheet, then print the labels.

Does a checked label mean it is legal?

No tool can promise that. The food label maker follows FDA rules and state laws and cites each one, but you are responsible for your label; ask your state's food safety office if you are unsure.

Can I make the label in Chinese?

Not yet. US labels must be in English, and the label fonts cover Latin letters only; this page is in Chinese, the label stays in English.
