How to make a pack from the cigarette box dieline

Three steps from a pack size to a closed flip-top box.

Start from a template
  • King size flip-top box55 × 22 × 88 mmLetter pages: 1
  • 100s flip-top box55 × 20 × 98 mmLetter pages: 2
  • Slim flip-top box45 × 15 × 100 mmLetter pages: 2

A cigarette box dieline with a real hinge lid

A flip-top pack is more than a tuck box with a lid. This one builds the true hinge-lid structure from your size and board, and shows it working before you print.

The king size pack: the lid closing over the inner frame and opening again

See the lid open and close

The 3D view folds the cigarette box dieline: the shell first, then the inner frame slides in while the lid stands open, and the lid closes over it. Turn the pack and stop at any stage.

Closed
Open: the inner frame stands above the cut

An inner frame that holds the lid

The frame is glued inside the front and sides and stands above the cut, so the lid closes over it and stays shut. Its round cut-out leaves room for a finger, and it is sized from the same inside as the shell.

Each panel’s size is printed on it

Every panel named and measured

The cigarette box template prints each outside panel’s name and size, from the lid front and lid top to the box front and back, and names the lid flap, the inner sides and the frame. The Math tab shows how each size was worked out.

20 sticks 7.8 mm across, staggered 7-6-7, inside the inner frame: the pack’s inside is 56.8 × 22.2 × 84.5 mm.

Size it from what goes in

Set how many sticks sit in a row, how many rows and whether they stagger, as 20 cigarettes sit 7-6-7, then their diameter and length. The inside is worked out to hold them without pressing, the inner frame’s board and clearance included, and Use this size puts it in the cigarette box dieline. Crayons and pencils work the same way.

Slide and shell pack

  1. 1Cut out both pieces, glue the sleeve into a tube

  2. 2Fold up the tray, glue its corner flaps

  3. 3Line the tray up with the sleeve

  4. 4Slide the tray in

A slide and shell pack too

Pick the drawer box for a slide and shell cigarette box template: a tray that slides out of a sleeve, the form Canada asks for. Its ready pack holds 20 king size cigarettes in two rows of ten and folds in four steps.

Cigarette box template sizes

Four ready packs, each cigarette box template drawn flat and folded. Open one in the tool to change its size or board.

King size flip-top box

55 × 22 × 88 mm outside, the king size pack of 20, on SBS 14 pt. The shell unfolds to 97.6 × 244.2 mm; one Letter or A4 page.

100s flip-top box

55 × 20 × 98 mm outside, the 100s pack of 20. The shell unfolds to 93.6 × 260.6 mm; one A4 page or two Letter pages.

Slim flip-top box

45 × 15 × 100 mm outside, the slim pack of 20. The shell unfolds to 73.6 × 252 mm; one A4 page or two Letter pages.

Slide and shell pack

A tray 85 × 80 × 16 mm inside, for 20 king size cigarettes in two rows of ten, in a sleeve. Closed 86.4 × 81.9 × 17.9 mm; tray and sleeve each on its own page.

Cigarette box sizes and dimensions

A king size pack of 20 is about 55 mm wide, 22 mm deep and 88 mm tall outside, the cigarettes in three rows of seven, six and seven. A 100s pack is taller and a little thinner, about 55 × 20 × 98 mm, and a slim pack narrower, about 45 × 15 × 100 mm. Each cigarette box template here opens at those outside sizes on SBS 14 pt board.

To size a pack from what goes in it, open Size from contents: 20 cigarettes 7.8 mm across and 84 mm long in rows of seven, six and seven need an inside of 56.8 × 22.2 × 84.5 mm to sit without pressing, the frame’s board and clearance and 0.5 mm of room included. Outside, the tool adds four boards across and in height and two front to back, because the sides, the top and the bottom are two layers. The table gives the outside, inside and flat size of each ready flip-top pack in millimeters and inches.

Outside sizes are how packs are measured. Inside and flat sizes are on SBS 14 pt (0.36 mm); the flat size is the shell’s.

How a cigarette box dieline folds (ECMA F60.12)

A flip-top pack is two pieces. The shell is one long blank: the lid flap, lid front, lid top and lid back, the hinge, then the box back, bottom and front, all one width, with the side panels on both edges. The inner side panels hang on the back panels and the outer ones on the front panels, and glued together they make a double side wall. A cut across the front and a slanted cut on each side part the lid from the box, so the lid opens on the hinge across the back.

The inner frame is the second piece: a front with a round cut-out and two side walls, glued inside the box front and sides and standing above the cut. When the lid closes it goes over the frame and holds. Without the frame the same shell is ECMA F60.11, the one-piece hinge-lid pack; switch the frame off under Lid and frame.

Board and allowances on a cigarette box template

Hinge-lid packs are made from folding boxboard about 0.25 to 0.40 mm thick, so this page starts on SBS 14 pt, 0.36 mm. Pick another board under Board, or type its caliper, and every line moves with it: the panels crease to crease, the front and back two boards wider than the inside and the sides one board deeper, the flaps clear of the front, the frame a board plus 1 mm narrower than the inside.

The lid front comes down 30% of the height and the side cut rises 30° from the front to the back, the proportions hinge-lid packs commonly use. Both change under Lid and frame, and the frame’s rise above the cut follows the lid front so it always sits under the lid top. For a model folded by hand, 110 lb card stock is about as thick as SBS 14 pt, so the sizes hold.

Cigarette box dieline files for your printer and for home

The production PDF is drawn at 1:1 with the cut, crease, bleed and safe lines on separate layers in spot colors set to overprint, plus a notes page with the board and every allowance. SVG and DXF carry the same lines for a cutting table or a design file, and PNG gives a picture of the dieline. In Illustrator, keep the cut and crease layers on top and place your artwork on a layer under them, out to the bleed line.

To print a cigarette box template at home, choose Print. The king size pack fits one Letter or A4 page with the frame beside the shell. The 100s and slim shells are taller than a Letter page holds, so they print on one A4 page, or across two Letter pages with corner marks to tape together.

How the template splits over Letter pages

At actual size the box takes 2 Letter pages to tape together, plus a page of folding steps.

Pack rules in the US, the EU and Canada

In the United States a cigarette package holds at least 20 cigarettes (21 CFR 1140.16(b)) and bears one of the required health warnings (15 U.S.C. 1333). Anyone who repackages or relabels a tobacco product counts as a tobacco product manufacturer (21 U.S.C. 387(20)).

In the European Union a unit packet of cigarettes is a cuboid holding at least 20, and a flip-top lid is hinged only at the back of the packet (Directive 2014/40/EU, Article 14), as the lid of this pack is. Canada asks for a slide and shell package (SOR/2019-107, section 40), for king size cigarettes 84 to 89 mm high, 81 to 106 mm wide and 15 to 18 mm deep when closed (section 41); the slide and shell pack here closes at 86.4 × 81.9 × 17.9 mm.

Flip-top boxes for crayons, cards and small gifts

A hinge-lid pack makes a handy box for anything long and slim: a set of crayons or colored pencils, a deck of cards, business cards or a small gift. Size from contents takes crayons and pencils as well: set how many sit in a row and their size, and the shell and frame are drawn around them.

The Design section puts a box color, text and a logo on the panels, upright on every face, and they print with the files. For a tuck end box or a box with a lid in the same board, open the dieline generator or browse all box templates.
