Popcorn Box Template to Print and Fold

A popcorn box template should start with how much popcorn goes in. This popcorn box template sizes a tapered box from its bottom, its top opening and its height, then works out what it holds in cups, so you can pick the box your night needs. Choose a size, print it on Letter or A4 at 100% and fold a box that stands open on the table.

How to make a popcorn box in five steps

Five steps take you from a sheet of card stock to a tapered box that stands open on the table.

Start from a template

Each card shows the box’s capacity, the room inside up to the top edge.

A popcorn box template that is sized by what it holds

The popcorn box template draws the box from its bottom, its top and its height, and the same numbers tell you how much popcorn fits inside.

  • Mini popcorn box275 mL, 9.3 US fl oz, 1.16 cups
  • Single serving popcorn box477 mL, 16.1 US fl oz, 2.02 cups
  • Movie night popcorn box670 mL, 22.6 US fl oz, 2.83 cups
  • Popcorn box, 63 mm base449 mL, 15.2 US fl oz, 1.9 cups

Capacity worked out in cups

Every size shows what it holds in milliliters, US fluid ounces and cups, and the number follows any change you make to the bottom, the top or the height. The capacity is the room inside up to the top edge, so a heaped box holds a little more than the number shows. This is where the popcorn box template answers the question that matters: how much popcorn will this box hold?

One piece wraps all four walls in a fan, with a single seam at the front left corner.
Two pieces join at two seams on opposite corners.

One piece or two, with the seams where they belong

In the popcorn box template the mini favor box is one piece: the four walls are laid in a fan, with a single seam at the front left corner so the front still reads as one panel, and the whole fan fits one page. The bigger boxes are two pieces, each a face and a side with its own glue flap, and they join at two seams on opposite corners. The front of the box is never split by a seam, which keeps a design or a name in one piece.

1The back and side flaps fold in flat
2The bottom panel folds under them
3The panel glues to the flaps

The bottom in order: the back and side flaps fold in flat, then the bottom panel folds under them and is glued to them.

A bottom that folds flat and glues strong

The bottom is a full panel hinged on the front, and the other three walls carry flaps with 45-degree ends. Fold the flaps in flat, fold the panel up under them and glue: the flaps lie inside the box, the panel is the flat floor you see, and the two make a bottom stiff enough for a full box of popcorn.

Scalloped

Straight: one clean cut edge all around. Scalloped: 3 arcs on each front and back panel and 3 on each side, 1.09 in of chord and 0.27 in deep.

A straight or a scalloped top

The top edge can be cut straight, for a clean modern line, or scalloped with equal arcs for a softer party edge. The scallops are drawn as real arcs, at least two on each wall and about 1 in of chord each, so the curve is smooth and easy to follow with scissors. Choose the edge in the tool and the flat pieces follow.

Bottom 2.5 inTop 3.5 inSlant height 4.53 in

The fan net of a two-piece box marks the top opening, the bottom and the front panel’s slant height.

Every panel and every fold marked on the net

Each wall is a trapezoid, wider at the top, and each panel is marked with its top, its bottom and its slant height. The labels are crease to crease: the mini’s front reads 2.34 × 1.76 × 4.01 in because it adds the board to the 2.33 × 1.75 in inside. The flat net marks the top opening, the bottom and the front panel’s slant height, the corner creases fold by the corner angle, and the bottom creases by 90 degrees less the wall tilt.

Every piece prints whole on its own page

Each piece of each size fits a Letter or an A4 page at actual size, so the print layout puts every piece whole on its own page and centers it. The mini box is one page for the box plus the steps; the three larger boxes are two pages, one piece each, on both papers. Nothing is taped together, and the fold steps come on a page in front of the pieces.

65 lb card stock0.216 mm
80 lb card stock0.267 mm

65 lb card stock is 0.216 mm thick and 80 lb card stock 0.267 mm: every panel is drawn for the board you choose.

65 lb card stock, or 80 lb for a bigger box

Popcorn boxes want a paper that folds easily and holds its shape while the box stands open, so the page starts on 65 lb cover card stock, about 176 gsm and 0.216 mm thick. A bigger box carries more popcorn, so 80 lb card stock (216 gsm, 0.267 mm) is offered for it, and every panel grows with the board you choose.

Popcorn box, 63 mm base

Bottom 63 mm, top 82 mm and 85 mm high, about 1.9 cups. Two pieces, two pages, plus folding steps, and it opens in millimeters.

What size popcorn box template fits how much popcorn?

Popcorn is easy to measure by volume, so the size question starts with cups. A cup is about 237 mL, and the single serving box holds 2.02 cups, a snack for one. The mini favor box holds 1.16 cups, enough for a child or a small treat; the movie night box holds 2.83 cups, close to 3 cups for two; and the metric box holds 1.9 cups, the size sold as a half-liter box, 63 mm square at the bottom.

The popcorn box template states the capacity for every size and updates it when you change the bottom, the top or the height. If your night needs a different amount, work back from the cups: a box of about 2.75 in square at the bottom, 3.75 in at the top and 5 in high holds 3.7 cups for a crowd, on three pages to tape, or in one piece at a print shop. Type the numbers, check the cups line and print.

How to make a popcorn box

Print the pieces at 100% and check the square. Cut the solid lines and score every dashed line before any fold: the four corner creases that run the full height of the box, and the bottom creases that join the walls to the flaps and the bottom panel. A bone folder or an empty ballpoint pen pressed along a ruler makes a crease that folds cleanly, and a scored crease keeps the printed surface from cracking.

Fold the walls up and glue the seam or seams. The one-piece mini wraps all four walls with a single glue flap at the front left corner; a two-piece box brings its two halves together and closes them at the front left and back right corners. Hold each seam for a few seconds or use double-sided tape, then stand the ring up. Fold the three flaps in flat, fold the bottom panel up under them and glue it to the flaps, pressing the whole bottom flat. Stand the box up; it sits on a flat, stiff floor.

The box folds on a loop: the fan rises into a ring, the seams close, the flaps fold in and the bottom closes under them.

The top, the bottom and the height of a popcorn box

A popcorn box is a tapered box: the top opening is larger than the bottom, so the sides lean out and the box is wider at the rim. The tool asks for the bottom length and width and the height. A new box starts with the top opening at 4/3 of the bottom and the top follows the bottom until you change it; the mini keeps that taper, while the other ready sizes keep their own top. Change the top on its own when you want a straighter or a wider box; the walls, the corner creases and the capacity all follow.

The walls lean by an angle set by the difference between the top and the bottom over the height, and the tool shows it: the single serving box leans about 6.1 degrees and the movie night box about 6.3 degrees, so both stand open with a gentle taper. The bottom folds by 90 degrees less the lean, and the corner creases fold by their own angle, which is slightly less than a right angle. The tool shows each of these angles in the Math tab, so you can check what you fold.

The taper from the side: the bottom 2.5 in, the top 3.5 in and the height 4.5 in; the walls lean 6.3° from vertical.

One piece or two pieces of a popcorn box template

The fan of four walls gets wider as the box gets bigger, and a wide fan is what decides how a popcorn box prints at home. The mini favor box is small enough that the whole fan fits a Letter or A4 page, so it is one piece with a single seam at the front left corner. The three larger boxes are two pieces, each a face and a side, so each piece fits a page with room for the glue flaps.

Two pieces means two seams, and the tool puts them on opposite corners: front left and back right. That is what keeps the front panel whole for a name, a date or a design. For a print shop’s big sheet, choose One piece and the same measurements are redrawn as one fan with one seam.

The mini favor box is one piece: the whole fan fits one Letter or A4 page, so a favor box is one sheet to cut and fold.

The scalloped top of a popcorn box

A scalloped top is a party edge: a row of equal arcs along the rim of each wall instead of a straight cut. The popcorn box template draws each arc as a real circle segment, about 1 in of chord and a quarter of the chord deep, and puts at least two on each wall so a small box still reads as scalloped. The number of arcs follows the width of each wall.

Cut the scallops with small sharp scissors, following the printed arc, and cut each one in two passes from the ends toward the middle for a smooth curve. The straight edge is the cleaner choice for a box that will be stacked or wrapped, and both edges come from the same measurements, so you can switch between them in the tool before you print.

Chord 0.88 in0.22 in

Each scallop is 0.88 in wide and 0.22 in deep, a quarter of its chord.

What card stock does a popcorn box template need?

The boxes are drawn for 65 lb cover card stock, about 176 gsm and 0.216 mm thick. It folds easily by hand, holds a crease and stands open, which is what a popcorn box has to do with popcorn inside. For a bigger box, or a box that will be filled and carried, choose 80 lb cover card stock, about 216 gsm and 0.267 mm, which is stiffer without being hard to fold.

Board thickness is built into every panel: the walls gain a board across, the height gains half a board and the bottom follows. The glue flap stays 1/2 in whatever the board, so a heavier paper still closes on a line you can glue. Change the board in the popcorn box template and the flat size changes with it, while the inside stays the size you asked for.

From the home printer to the print shop

The print PDF is for a home printer: Letter or A4, at actual size, with the folding steps and the check squares in front. When the box goes to a print shop, use the production PDF instead: one page at actual size with a 1/8 in (3.175 mm) bleed following every cut line, a safe area inside them, spot colors set to overprint and a notes page with the sizes.

The popcorn box dieline downloads as an SVG for a cutting machine, with each piece in its own group and the cut and score lines named, and as a DXF for a cutting table. The three larger boxes in one piece need a sheet bigger than a home page; the mini fits one, and a two-piece box keeps every piece inside a 12 by 12 in mat.

The bleed around one piece: it runs 0.125 in past every cut line.

Design your popcorn box with AI

A plain box is a good start, and the artwork is where the box becomes the party. After a download, Design the popcorn box with AI opens AI packaging design in Auto mode: describe the colors, the pattern and the words to print, and place the result on the front panel in the Design section.

The popcorn box template itself stays free, and you pay only for the designs you receive. For a name and a date on the front, the Design section adds them right on this box. Start from all box templates for another shape, or open the dieline generator when you need a production file with layers, bleed and spot colors.

Open the popcorn box template

Is this popcorn box template free?

Yes. Every size, every download and the print-and-fold PDF are free, with no signup and no watermark. Save the box in this browser, in a project file or in a free account; you pay only for the AI designs you receive.

What sizes does the popcorn box template come in?

Four: a mini favor box with a 1.75 in bottom and a 2.33 in top, 4 in high; a single serving box at 2.5 in, 3.25 in and 3.5 in; a movie night box at 2.5 in, 3.5 in and 4.5 in; and a metric box at 63 mm, 82 mm and 85 mm. Type your own bottom, top and height and the box is redrawn around them.

How much popcorn does each size hold?

The mini favor box holds 1.16 cups, the single serving box 2.02 cups, the movie night box 2.83 cups and the metric box 1.9 cups, all measured inside up to the top edge. The tool shows the capacity in cups, milliliters and US fluid ounces, and it follows any change to the size.

Can I print a popcorn box template on A4?

Yes. Choose A4 next to Download and the pages follow A4. Every size prints each piece whole on A4 exactly as it does on Letter, the mini on one page and the three larger boxes on two pages, with a page of folding steps in front.

How many pages does a popcorn box print on?

The one-piece mini prints one page for the box at actual size, plus a page of folding steps. In the popcorn box template each of the three two-piece boxes prints two pages, one piece on each, on Letter and on A4, plus the steps page. Nothing has to be taped together.

Can I make a popcorn box template in my own size?

Yes. Type the bottom length and width, the height and the top opening in inches or millimeters, and the box is redrawn with its walls, creases, flaps and capacity. A new box and the mini start at 4/3 of the bottom and follow it; the other sizes keep their own top until you change it.

What card stock should I use for a popcorn box?

65 lb cover card stock, about 176 gsm and 0.216 mm thick, is what the boxes are drawn for. For a bigger box, 80 lb cover card stock (216 gsm, 0.267 mm) is stiffer and still folds by hand. Every panel follows the board you choose.

How do I fold the bottom of a popcorn box?

Fold the back flap and both side flaps in flat across the bottom opening, then fold the bottom panel up under them and glue it to the flaps. The flaps end inside the box, the panel makes the flat bottom, and the glue line runs behind its edges.

Can I cut a popcorn box template on a cutting machine?

Yes. The SVG keeps each piece as a closed group with Cut and Score lines, and every two-piece box fits a 12 by 12 in mat. The mini in one piece fits the same mat; the three larger boxes in one piece need a 12 by 24 in mat, so choose Two pieces to cut them on the smaller one.

Is there a popcorn box template printable for a party favor?

The mini favor box is the party size: one piece, one page for the box plus folding steps, and about 1.2 cups. Print a page for each guest, cut and fold the fan, glue the one seam and the bottom, and the favors are ready before the film starts.
