Free Printable Rectangle Box Template

A box with lid suits a gift you unwrap: jewelry, a gift card, candles or chocolates. A tuck box holds something tall and slim, like a bar of soap or a deck of cards, and needs glue only on its side seam. A drawer box slides open like a matchbox, for a ring, pens or a small surprise. A mailer box opens like a little suitcase lid and holds itself together with no glue at all.

Every style in this rectangle box template keeps the same idea: you set the room inside and the tool works out the rest. Square boxes have their own paper box template.

Measure the item and add a little room: the sizes you type are inside sizes. For a box with lid, the inside of the lid is the outside of the base plus 2 mm (about 5/64 in) of clearance, so it slips on, and the thickness of the card is counted in every panel.

The tool also says how big the box is when closed. The small rectangle gift box, 3.5 × 2.5 × 1 in inside with a 0.5 in lid, measures 3.65 × 2.61 × 1.02 in closed, and the mini mailer box, 3 × 2 × 1 in inside, measures 3.08 × 2.02 × 1.02 in. Use the closed size when the box has to fit a drawer, a bag or an envelope.

On 65 lb card stock, the largest boxes of the presets’ shapes on one Letter page are, inside, 4.09 × 2.92 × 1.17 in for a box with lid like the small gift box, with its 0.5 in lid, 2.65 × 1.06 × 4.24 in for a tuck box, 4.26 × 2.13 × 1.06 in for a drawer box and 3.14 × 2.09 × 1.04 in for a mailer box.

A4 is narrower than Letter but taller, so on A4 the box with lid comes out a little bigger and the other styles a little smaller. A two-piece rectangle box template a little bigger still needs no tape: the 5 × 3 × 2 in gift box prints its base and lid whole on a page each. Past that, the box is split over pages you tape together; the page count next to the size tells you which.

Cut out the one piece and fold up the front and back walls. Turn the small ears at their ends in, then roll each end wall over the ears so its inner layer comes down inside and its tabs lock into the slots in the floor. Close the lid, tuck its side flaps in and slide the tuck in behind the front wall. The thumb notch in the front wall helps you open it again.

A card stock mailer suits light gifts and presentation boxes. For shipping, box makers make mailers from corrugated board: E flute is about 1.5 mm thick. Open the dieline generator for a corrugated mailer from 6 × 6 × 2 to 14 × 10 × 4 in, drawn for that board.

Score the dashed lines with a bone folder or an empty ballpoint pen against a ruler and fold them away from the printed side. For a box with lid, fold up the walls of each piece, glue the corner flaps inside the end walls and put the lid on once both are dry.

The tuck box needs glue only on its side seam: glue it into a tube, then tuck in the bottom and the top. For the drawer box, glue the sleeve into a tube, fold up the tray, glue its corner flaps and slide it in. Page 1 of every rectangle box template draws each step, and the 3D view folds the box before you print.

Use 65 lb cover card stock, about 176 gsm and 8.5 pt thick. Most home printers feed it, it folds cleanly and every size here is drawn for it. Heavier 80 to 110 lb card stock is sturdier if your printer takes it: choose it under Board so the sizes allow for its thickness.

Print at 100%, Actual size or No scaling, never Fit to page. Page 1 has a 1 in square and a 25 mm square to check the scale, the folding steps and a map of the pages. On a Cricut, upload the Cricut SVG, set the score lines to Score and the rest to Cut. For a print shop, download the production PDF, SVG or DXF, with cut, crease, bleed and safe lines on their own layers.
