An envelope template made for the card you have

Every envelope template here is drawn from its size, so the flaps, the glue and the liner always fit the card inside.

A 7 × 5 in card in a 7.25 × 5.25 in envelope: 0.25 in of room each way.

The envelope worked out from your card

Type the card’s width and height and the room it needs, 1/4 in by default, and Use sets the envelope template to that size. A 7 × 5 in card gets a 7.25 × 5.25 in envelope, the A7; any card from a gift card to a flat A4 sheet gets its own envelope the same way.

The glue strips (yellow) on the side flaps, under the bottom flap’s slanted edges.

Glue strips where the bottom flap lands

The glue strips are worked out by folding each flap of the envelope template over in the drawing, so they sit exactly under the bottom flap’s slanted edges on the side flaps. They print hatched and stay free of ink, and their width is yours to set.

A 4.5 × 1.125 in window, 0.875 in from the left and 0.5 in from the bottom of the front.

A window envelope in one switch

Switch Window on and the envelope template cuts a rounded window from the front, 4 1/2 × 1 1/8 in, 7/8 in from the left and 1/2 in from the bottom on a #10. Move it or resize it, and the checks say where it sits for mailing.

Liner

The liner is the seal flap inset 0.25 in all round, with a band below the fold.

An envelope liner template that matches

Every envelope template has its liner on a sheet of its own: the seal flap’s shape inset 1/4 in all round with a band below the fold, so the liner slides in past the side flaps and leaves the flap’s edge for the glue.

6 × 6 inLetter, nonmachinable
9 × 12 inLarge envelope (flat)

Drawn to one scale. Length over height from 1.3 to 2.5 mails as a machinable US letter.

Sizes checked against US letter mail

The Checks tab says how US mail takes each envelope template size: a letter, a large envelope or a parcel, and whether the length over the height falls between 1.3 and 2.5. A square envelope of letter size mails as a nonmachinable letter, and the check says so before you print.

A7 envelope template

7 1/4 × 5 1/4 in with a euro flap, for 5 × 7 in cards, invitations and photos.

A2 envelope

5 3/4 × 4 3/8 in, for folded note cards; it prints whole on a Letter or A4 page.

#10 window envelope

9 1/2 × 4 1/8 in with a wallet flap and the window envelope makers use.

6 in square envelope

6 × 6 in with a pointed flap, for square invitations and cards.

C5 envelope

229 × 162 mm, for an A5 sheet or an A4 folded once; it opens in millimeters.

9 × 12 in catalog envelope

Opens on the short side and holds a letter-size sheet flat, with a wallet flap.

What size envelope template fits my card?

Envelopes are named by the cards they hold. The A sizes are for cards and invitations: the A2 for a 4 1/4 × 5 1/2 in note card, the A6 for a 4 × 6 in photo, the A7 for a 5 × 7 in card and the A9 for a half-letter card. The numbered sizes are business envelopes: the #10 takes a letter folded in three and the #9 slips inside it as a return envelope. ISO sizes go with A paper: C6 for A6, C5 for A5 and C4 for a flat A4.

Each A7 envelope template and every other ready size leaves about 1/8 to 1/4 in of room around its card. For a card of your own, type its size and the room you want, and the envelope template draws the envelope from there.

How to make an envelope from a printable envelope template

Print the printable envelope template at 100% on text paper, cut along the solid line and score the four dashed folds with a bone folder or an empty ballpoint pen against a ruler. Scored folds stay straight and the paper doesn’t crack along them.

Fold the two side flaps in first, then fold the bottom flap up over them and glue it along the yellow strips. Leave the seal flap open until the card is inside, then close it with a glue stick, a sticker or a wax seal.

The side flaps fold in, the bottom flap comes up over them and the seal flap closes the envelope.

The parts of an envelope template

An envelope is a front panel with four flaps. Two side flaps fold in first; the bottom flap comes up over them and is glued to them, which makes the pocket; the seal flap closes it. The front is printed on the outside of the sheet, and every flap folds behind it, so one printed side makes both the front and the back.

The flap sizes are worked out from the envelope template’s own size: the seal flap is a share of the shorter side by its shape, the bottom flap reaches the seal flap’s edge and laps under it by about an eighth of the height, and the side flaps are a sixth of the shorter side. Each one can be typed in, and the Math tab shows every formula.

  • Front7.25 × 5.25 in
  • Seal flap2.205 in
  • Bottom flap3.675 in
  • Side flaps0.84 in
  • Glue strip0.25 in

The seal flap laps 0.63 in over the bottom flap.

A #10 envelope template for business letters

The #10 envelope template is 9 1/2 × 4 1/8 in with a wallet flap: a shallow straight seal flap over a bottom flap that reaches almost to the top, so the back is one clean panel. It takes a Letter or A4 sheet folded in three, and the #9, 8 7/8 × 3 7/8 in, fits inside it to carry a reply.

The #10 window envelope cuts the window envelope makers use, 4 1/2 × 1 1/8 in, 7/8 in from the left and 1/2 in from the bottom, so a letter’s address shows through. Cover the window with clear film glued on all four sides before you mail it.

A #9 return envelope (8.875 × 3.875 in) slips inside a #10 (9.5 × 4.125 in).

The envelope liner template

A liner is a printed or patterned sheet glued inside the seal flap, the part people see when they open the envelope. The envelope liner template is drawn for each envelope: the seal flap’s shape inset 1/4 in on every side, with a band that reaches half the envelope’s height below the fold.

Print the envelope liner template on patterned paper or with your own design, slide it into the finished envelope and glue it under the seal flap. The inset leaves the flap’s edge bare, so the flap still seals.

Mailing an envelope you made

US mail takes an envelope as a letter from 5 × 3 1/2 in up to 11 1/2 × 6 1/8 in and 1/4 in thick. A letter whose length over height is under 1.3 or over 2.5 is nonmachinable and pays a surcharge, which is why square envelopes cost more to mail. Past a letter, up to 15 × 12 in, it is a large envelope, as the 9 × 12 catalog envelope is.

The Checks tab works this out for every size you type, from the envelope template’s own width and height, and the window check keeps a window at least 1/2 in above the bottom edge and parallel to the length, as US mail asks.

How US mail takes each size: a letter with its length over height from 1.3 to 2.5 is machinable.

What paper does an envelope template need?

Every envelope template here is drawn for 80 lb text paper, about 118 gsm and 0.147 mm thick: thick enough to hide the card and thin enough to fold flat four times. 24 lb writing paper suits business envelopes, 70 lb text a light invitation and 100 lb text a heavier one.

For a sturdy card envelope, 65 lb cover card stock is in the paper menu too; score every fold well, since card stock folds flat on itself at each crease. The paper’s thickness is shown in points and in millimeters.

From the home printer to the print shop

The envelope template’s print PDF is for a home printer: Letter, A4, Legal, 11 × 17 in or A3 at actual size, with the folding steps in front. The A1 and A2 envelopes print whole on Letter; the A7, A6, #10 and the squares print whole on 11 × 17 in or A3. On smaller paper the print PDF splits the envelope over pages to tape together.

For a print shop, the production PDF has a 1/8 in (3.175 mm) bleed following every cut line, a safe area, the glue strips free of ink, spot colors set to overprint and a notes page with the sizes. The envelope template also downloads as an SVG for a cutting machine, with named cut and score lines, and as a DXF.

A print shop’s file: the artwork runs 0.125 in past every cut line.

Design your envelope with AI

After a download, Design with AI opens AI packaging design in Auto mode: describe the colors, the pattern and the words, and place the result on the front or the flaps in the Design section.

You pay only for the designs you receive. For a name, an address or a logo, the Design section adds them right on this envelope; open the dieline generator for boxes and bags, or start from all box templates.

Open the envelope template

Is this envelope template free?

Yes. Every size, every download and the print-and-fold PDF are free, with no signup and no watermark. Save the envelope in this browser, in a project file or in a free account.

What sizes does the envelope template come in?

21 ready sizes: A1, A2, A6, A7, A8, A9 and A10; #6 3/4, #9, #10 and a #10 window envelope; 6 × 9 and 9 × 12 in; squares of 5, 5 1/2, 6 and 6 1/2 in; and C6, DL, C5 and C4. Type any other size in inches or millimeters.

How do I make an envelope for my card?

Type the card’s width and height and the room it needs, 1/4 in by default, and choose Use: the envelope is drawn that much larger each way, with its flaps, glue strips and liner.

Can I print an A7 envelope template on Letter paper?

The A7 opens flat to about 8.9 × 11.1 in, more than a Letter page holds, so it prints whole on 11 × 17 in or A3 paper; on Letter or A4 the print PDF splits it over two pages to tape together. A cutting machine cuts it from a 12 × 12 in sheet, and the A1 and A2 print whole on Letter.

What is a euro flap?

A deep straight seal flap with rounded corners, also called a square flap. The pointed flap comes to a rounded point, the round flap is one arc, and the wallet flap is a shallow straight flap over a tall bottom flap, as business envelopes have.

Is there an envelope liner template?

Yes. Every envelope has its own liner: switch the sheet above the drawing to Liner and download it like the envelope. It is the seal flap inset 1/4 in all round with a band below the fold.

Can I make a window envelope?

Yes. Switch Window on in the envelope template’s Envelope section: a #10 gets the 4 1/2 × 1 1/8 in window 7/8 in from the left and 1/2 in from the bottom, and you can move or resize it. Cover it with clear film glued on all four sides.

Can I mail an envelope made from the envelope template?

Yes. The Checks tab says whether the size mails as a US letter, a large envelope or a parcel, and whether a letter is nonmachinable, as square envelopes are. Use a paper heavy enough to hide what is inside and seal the flap well.

What paper should I use for an envelope template?

80 lb text paper, about 118 gsm, is what the envelopes are drawn for. 24 lb writing paper suits business envelopes, and 65 lb cover card stock makes a sturdy card envelope.

Can I cut an envelope template on a cutting machine?

Yes. The SVG keeps the envelope as one closed cut line with its score lines. The A1 to A7, the #10 and the 5 in square fit a 12 × 12 in mat; the A8, A9, A10, 6 × 9, the 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 in squares and C5 take a 12 × 24 in mat.
