How to make a hexagon box in five steps

Five steps take you from a hexagon box template on the screen to a closed box with its lid on.

A hexagon box template drawn from your size

Every hexagon box template here is worked out from the size you type, so the walls stand square, the flaps sit inside and the lid fits.

  • Walls with flaps
  • Corner flaps0.5 in
  • Walls over the flaps

Three walls carry a corner flap at each end; each folds 60° and is glued inside the next wall.

Corner flaps on every other wall

Three walls carry a corner flap at each end. Each flap lies in the 60° gap between two walls, cut along the next wall’s side, folds 60° and is glued inside that wall, so every corner is glued and no flap shows outside. The flaps are 1/2 in wide unless you change them.

  • Base outside3.53 in
  • Clearance0.08 in
  • Lid inside3.61 in

Across the flats: the base’s outside, then the clearance, then the lid’s inside between its flaps.

A lid that slides on

The lid’s inside, measured across the flats between its own corner flaps, is the base’s outside plus the clearance: 2 mm, 1 mm each side, unless you type your own. A snug lid takes less, a loose one more, and the Checks tab says when it binds or rattles.

A round item up to 3.52 in across fits: the flaps stay near the corners.

Room for round things

The corner flaps stay near the corners, so a round item as wide as the box across the flats still fits: the 3.5 in box holds a 3.5 in candle jar or a stack of macarons. The size hint under the sizes says how big a round item fits.

Lid half the height
Full-depth lid

The lid is half the base’s height unless you type its own, up to a full-depth lid that reaches the table.

Any lid depth

The lid is half the base’s height unless you type its own, from a shallow lid to a full-depth lid that reaches the table. The hexagon box dieline redraws the lid’s walls and flaps for the depth you choose.

The hexagon box template is drawn for 65 lb card stock, which folds cleanly on a home printer, and comes in 80 lb card, 14, 16 and 18 pt board too. Every crease follows the board you pick.

What size hexagon box template do I need?

Measure what goes inside. For a hexagonal item, measure across its flats; for a round one, its diameter; then add a little room. That is the hexagon box template’s inside across the flats, and its height is how tall the item stands.

The table lists every ready size with its size across the corners, the largest round item it holds and its flat base. For a size of your own, type it in inches or millimeters and the free hexagon box template draws the box from there.

Across the flats, the side or the corners?

A regular hexagon has one size three ways. Across the flats is the distance between two opposite walls, the way most hexagon boxes are sold. The side is one wall’s width, and across the corners is twice the side.

Across the flats is √3, about 1.732, times the side, so a 2 in side is 3.46 in across the flats and 4 in across the corners. Type whichever you know; the hexagon box dieline keeps it across the flats and shows the other two in the Math tab.

How to fold a hexagon box

Score every dashed fold with a bone folder or an empty ballpoint pen against a ruler. On the base, fold up the three walls that carry corner flaps, then turn each flap in by 60°, so it lies where the next wall will stand.

Put glue on the flaps and fold the other three walls up over them, pressing each corner for a few seconds. Fold the lid the same way, turn it over and slide it down over the base.

Three walls rise, their flaps fold in, the other three close over them, and the lid goes on.

The parts of a hexagon box template

A hexagon box with a lid is two trays. Each has a hexagonal base with six walls standing on its edges: three walls with a corner flap at each end, and three walls that close over the flaps.

The lid is the same tray, a little larger, with shorter walls. On the hexagon box dieline both pieces lie side by side, the base on the left and the lid on the right, each with its panel names and sizes.

  • Corner flaps0.5 in

How much room does the lid need?

The lid has to clear the base’s outside and its own corner flaps. This hexagon box template sizes the lid’s inside, between its flaps, as the base’s outside plus the clearance, measured across the flats.

2 mm, about 1 mm each side, slides on easily on card stock. Thicker board or a printed and coated sheet takes a little more; a gift box you want snug takes a little less. Change it under Lid and flaps.

From the home printer to the print shop

The print PDF is for a home printer at actual size, with the folding steps in front. The base and the lid print whole wherever the page holds them, on one page together when they fit, and a larger piece prints over pages to tape together. The print shop PDF has a 1/8 in (3.175 mm) bleed following every cut line, a safe area, the glue areas free of ink and a notes page with the sizes.

The hexagon box template also downloads as an SVG for a cutting machine, with named cut and score lines, as a DXF and as a PNG. Every ready size but the cake box fits a 12 × 12 in mat.

A print shop’s file: the artwork runs 0.13 in past every cut line.

Is this hexagon box template free?

Yes. Every size, every lid and every file is a free hexagon box template, with no signup and no watermark. Save the box in this browser, in a project file or in a free account, and come back to change it.

For other shapes, the dieline generator draws tuck end boxes, boxes with lids, mailer boxes and bags, the paper box template has square boxes to print at home, and all box templates are in one library.

Design your hexagon box with AI

After a download, Design with AI opens AI packaging design in Auto mode: describe the colors, the pattern and the words, then place the result on the walls, the base or the lid in the Design section.

You pay only for the designs you receive. For a logo, a name or a label, the Design section adds them right on this hexagon box template, wall by wall, each one upright on its slanted wall.

Hexagon box template FAQ

More questions? The Checks and Math tabs in the tool explain every size, the corner flaps and the lid’s fit.

Open the hexagon box template

Is this hexagon box template free?

Yes. Every size, lid and file is free, with no signup and no watermark. Save the box in this browser, in a project file or in a free account.

What sizes does the hexagon box template come in?

7 ready sizes, inside across the flats by height: 3.5 × 1.5 in, a 2 × 1 in mini, a 2.5 × 1.25 in favor box, a 3 × 1.25 in soap box, a 4 × 2 in cookie box, a 3.25 × 3.5 in candle box and a 6.5 × 4 in cake box. Type any other size in inches or millimeters.

Can I size it by the side instead of across the flats?

Yes. Switch Size by to Side or Corners and type that size. Across the flats is √3 times the side, and across the corners twice the side; the Math tab shows all three.

How does the lid fit?

Its inside, between its corner flaps, is the base’s outside plus the clearance, 2 mm across the flats unless you change it. The lid is half the base’s height unless you type a deeper or shallower one.

Will a round candle jar fit?

Yes, as wide as the box across the flats: the corner flaps stay near the corners. The size hint under the sizes gives the largest round item each box holds.

Can I print a hexagon box template on Letter paper?

The mini and favor boxes print base and lid together on one Letter or A4 page, and the 3.5 × 1.5 in and soap boxes on two pages, each piece whole. The cookie box prints whole on 11 × 17 in or A3.

Do I need glue?

Yes, a little: each corner flap is glued inside the next wall. A glue stick holds card stock; craft glue or double-sided tape holds board.

What paper or board should I use?

65 lb card stock is what the boxes are drawn for, and folds cleanly from a home printer. 80 lb card is stiffer, and a print shop uses 14 to 18 pt board.

Can I cut a hexagon box on a cutting machine?

Yes. The SVG keeps each piece as one closed cut line with its score lines. Every ready size but the cake box fits a 12 × 12 in mat.
