Gift box design starts with the structure
Premium gift boxes are usually rigid set-up boxes: chipboard, often 2 to 3 mm thick, wrapped in printed or specialty paper and delivered already built (PakFactory). They come as a lid and base, a drawer that slides out of a sleeve, a book style box that opens like a cover, or a box with a magnetic flap. PakFactory puts them at up to three times the cost of folding cartons.
The faces here start at common sizes: a 10.5 × 7.5 × 3.1 inch lid box is a standard apparel size (Paper Mart), OXO Packaging recommends an 8 × 8 × 3 1/8 inch magnetic box (OXO), 8 × 6 × 3 inches is a common compact rigid box (Dylign), and Packlane’s cardstock product box is 3.5 × 2.25 × 5.5 inches (Packlane). Type your own size when yours differs.
A rigid box maker wraps each face from their own dieline, with turn-ins that vary by board, so place the face on it and keep words a quarter inch in from the edges. Folding cartons ship flat and fold up, and our free dieline generator draws them, so a whole folding gift box can be designed here on its real panels with Whole box.
