AI Matchbox Design

Measure the box before you design. Custom matchboxes in the US are usually 2.25 × 1.375 × 0.375 in, and the blank boxes sold for weddings and the artwork templates printers send are laid out at that size. Its top has a printing area of about 2 × 1.25 in, which is where the top label starts.

A standard safety matchbox is smaller, about 50.5 × 37.5 × 12.5 mm. A label 1.75 in wide and 1.25 in tall fits its top with about 0.1 in to spare on each side: set that size on the top label type and the cut line, the safe area and the bleed follow.

A wedding matchbox is a favor guests use that night, for the candles on each table or a sparkler send-off, and keep afterwards. The classic personalized matchbox carries the couple’s names, the date and a short line such as A Perfect Match or Light of My Life. Type the names in Name, the date in Date or line, the venue or city in the third field and the short line in the fourth.

For the count, one box per guest plus 10 to 15 percent extra is common practice, because matchboxes also go on the bar, the cake table and the lounge. A standard safety matchbox holds about 40 matches and the smaller custom boxes 15 to 24, plenty for a night of candles.

To make the wedding matchbox match the stationery, add the invitation as a reference image and say to take its colors and lettering. Botanical Line suits a garden wedding, Quiet Luxury a formal one and Art Deco a black tie party.

Custom matches at the host stand are a long tradition of good bars, restaurants and hotels: a guest pockets a box and the name goes home with them. Put the name on the top, the city or website in the third field and a short line such as Since 1987 or Open Late in the fourth. Japanese Match Label, Mid-Century and Vintage Label draw on the classic bar matchbox.

A photo of the sign, the menu or the logo as a reference image keeps the brand’s colors and letterforms. Make the top label for blank boxes you fill yourself, or the wrap when a printer prints the top, the side and the bottom of every box.

For a brand, a matchbox is a small piece of packaging that travels: candle makers pack one with every candle, shops hand them out at events and hotels set them by the fireplace. Type the brand name and the website, pick Swiss Grid or Risograph for a modern look, and add your logo as a reference image so it is kept as your mark in every matchbox design.

A matchbox also makes a pocket sized gift box. Choose Whole matchbox for a paper drawer box that holds seeds, a ring, candy or a folded note, with your artwork on the sleeve and the tray, printed at home on 65 lb card stock.

Give a printer the wrap. For matchbox printing, printers usually ask for the top, one side and the bottom in one file with 1/8 in bleed, 300 dpi or more and text as outlines. The wrap’s print PDF has that layout, with the cut line and both folds on their own layers. Even at 1K a 2 × 1.25 in top label comes to about 550 to 650 dpi, and 2K far more.

A matchbox top is smaller than a business card, so one strong idea wins: a monogram, a single drawing, a bold name. Start with the occasion and the feel, such as “a moody speakeasy, brass and deep green, one stylized cocktail glass”, and let the style direction set the look.
