A matchbox template at a real size, with measurements

Most matchbox templates online are one fixed picture. This one draws the tray and the sleeve from your size and tells you what each panel measures.

Closed: 50.4 × 37.4 × 12.5 mm

A standard safety matchbox is about 50.5 × 37.5 × 12.5 mm

The size of a real matchbox

The classic matchbox closes at 50.4 × 37.4 × 12.5 mm. A standard safety matchbox is about 50.5 × 37.5 × 12.5 mm, so the box you fold is the size people expect.

Measurements printed on the panels

Looking for a matchbox template with measurements? Every panel with room for it prints its size in gray, such as 1.98 × 0.38 in on a tray wall, so you can check the print with a ruler. A switch turns the sizes off.

Whole pieces on as few pages as possible

The tool shows the page count before you print. Four sizes fit on one Letter or A4 page. The large matchbox takes two, one whole piece on each, so there is nothing to tape.

A name, a date or your artwork on the sleeve

The Design section puts a name, a date or "Open me" on the sleeve, plus a logo or colors, and prints them with the template. After a download you can also design the box with AI in AI gift box design, fitted to this exact dieline. That uses credits; the template stays free.

What size is a standard matchbox?

Measurement guides put a standard safety matchbox at about 50.5 × 37.5 × 12.5 mm, roughly 2 × 1.5 × 0.5 in, and Wikipedia gives about 5 × 3.5 × 1.5 cm. The classic size in this matchbox template matches it: 1.95 × 1.36 × 0.38 in inside, 1.98 × 1.47 × 0.49 in closed.

Kitchen matchboxes are much larger and vary by brand, so measure yours and type its inside size. On one Letter page, the largest box with the classic proportions is about 3.58 × 2.49 × 0.69 in inside.

How a matchbox box template is built

A matchbox has two pieces. The tray has a floor, two side walls and two end walls, with corner flaps glued inside the end walls, like the ECMA B40.20.00.00 tray. The sleeve is a tube of four panels with a glue flap.

This matchbox box template draws the sleeve from the outside of the tray plus 2 mm of clearance (about 5/64 in) in width and height, the default templatemaker.nl uses too. The drawer slides easily but does not drop out, and the thickness of the card is counted in every panel.

How to fold and glue a matchbox

Cut both pieces on the solid lines. Score the dashed lines with a bone folder or an empty ballpoint pen against a ruler and fold them away from the printed side. Fold up the tray walls and glue the corner flaps inside the end walls.

Glue the sleeve’s flap inside the opposite edge, let the tube dry flat and slide the tray in. Too tight? Raise the clearance or set the board to the card you used. Too loose? Lower the clearance. Page 1 of the matchbox template draws each step, and the 3D view slides the drawer before you print.

Best paper for a matchbox template

Use 65 lb cover card stock, about 176 gsm and 8.5 pt thick. Most home printers feed it, it folds cleanly and the matchbox template is sized for it by default.

Plain 20 lb printer paper works for a test, but the box comes out floppy. Heavier 80 to 110 lb card stock is sturdier if your printer takes it: choose it in the board settings so the sizes allow for it.

Printing the matchbox template at actual size

Print at 100%, Actual size or No scaling, never Fit to page. Page 1 has the instructions, a 1 in square and a 25 mm square to check the scale, the folding steps and a map of the pages.

Cut lines are solid and fold lines are dashed, and most panels show their sizes in gray. For a print shop or a cutting table, download the production PDF, SVG or DXF, with cut, crease, bleed and safe lines on their own layers.

How the template splits over Letter pages

At actual size the box takes 2 Letter pages, one whole piece on each (nothing to tape), plus a page of folding steps.

What to put in a matchbox

A matchbox holds stud earrings, a ring, a pin, seeds, candy or a folded note. The deep size takes a tiny gift or a tiny book, and the gift card box a gift card. Print the matchbox template 24 times for an advent calendar, with a number on each sleeve.

For a gift, slip "reasons I love you" notes into the tray and put a name and a date on the sleeve. For a figure, a blind box template may fit better; more shapes are in the box templates library.

Open the matchbox template

Is this matchbox template free?

Yes. Every size and file is free, with no signup and no watermark. Save your box in this browser, in a project file or in a free account.

What size is a standard matchbox?

About 50.5 × 37.5 × 12.5 mm, roughly 2 × 1.5 × 0.5 in. The classic matchbox template closes within a fraction of a millimeter of that.

How do I make a matchbox out of paper?

Print it at 100% on card stock, cut and score it, glue the tray’s corner flaps inside its end walls, glue the sleeve into a tube and slide the tray in.

Is there a matchbox template with measurements?

Yes. Every panel with room for it prints its size in gray, such as 1.98 × 0.38 in. Turn the sizes off for a clean print.

What if the drawer is too tight or too loose?

The sleeve is 2 mm larger than the tray. Raise that clearance if the drawer sticks, lower it if the drawer slides out too easily, or set the board to your card.

What paper should I use for a matchbox box template?

65 lb cover card stock, about 176 gsm. Printer paper works for a test but is floppy; 80 to 110 lb card stock is sturdier if you set it as the board.

Can I cut a matchbox template with a Cricut?

Yes. In the Cricut SVG each piece is a group with Cut and Score layers to cut plain card stock. For a printed design, print the template and cut it by hand.

Can I make a matchbox poster here?

No. A matchbox poster is wall art made in Canva, a row of matchbox graphics with names and dates. Here you put the name and the date on the sleeve of a real matchbox instead.

What is the difference between a matchbox and a matchbook?

A matchbook is a folded cardboard cover with matches stapled inside and a striker. A matchbox is a tray in a sleeve, which is what this template makes. A working striker needs a chemical coating, so a printed one is only for looks.

Can I print the matchbox template on A4?

Yes. Choose A4 next to Download; every size is laid out for A4 at actual size.
