A gable box template drawn from your size

Every gable box template here is worked out from the inside size, so the roof meets in the middle, the ears find their slots and the bottom flaps fit.

  • Roof rise2.01 in
  • Roof run2 in
  • Handle panel1.5 in
  • Pitch45°

The end of the box: the gable stays in the side panel’s plane, the roof rests on it and the handle panels stand back to back.

A roof and handle that meet in the middle

The two roof slopes each run half the box’s width less half a board, so the handle panels stand one board apart, back to back, with the handle hole through both. The roof rises half the width for a 45° roof, or to the height you type, and the handle panel is 1 1/2 in tall unless you change it.

The gable’s slot with both ears through it
Closed, the ears through the slots

The slot is 0.08 in wide, room for both ears side by side, and each ear is 0.37 in high.

Ears that lock the top with no glue

Each handle panel has an ear at both ends, and each gable has a narrow tower with a slot that takes the two ears side by side with 0.5 mm of room. Bend the gable out a little at its fold, push the ears through, and the template gable box holds shut and opens again.

Tuck

Each bottom closed, seen from below.

Auto lock, 1-2-3 or tuck bottom

The auto lock bottom has two hatched triangles glued to the side flaps, so the bottom forms as the tube opens. The 1-2-3 bottom folds flap 1, both flaps 2 and flap 3 with its tongue under flap 1, no glue. The tuck bottom is a closure with a tuck and two dust flaps.

A 3 × 2 in window, at least 0.5 in from every crease.

A window in the front

Switch Window on and the tool cuts a rounded window from the front panel. Move it or resize it; it always keeps 1/2 in from every crease, and the design leaves it clear. Cover it with clear film from inside.

What size gable box template do I need?

Measure what goes inside: its length, its width and how tall it stands. Those are the gable box template’s inside length, width and height to the eave, the line where the roof begins. The roof and the handle rise above it, so a 6 × 4 × 4 in box stands about 7 1/2 in to the top of its handle.

The table lists every ready size with its height to the handle’s top and its flat sheet. For a size of your own, type it in inches or millimeters and the free gable box template draws the box from there.

How to fold a gable box

Score every dashed fold with a bone folder or an empty ballpoint pen against a ruler, then fold the walls into a tube and glue the side flap inside the far wall. Close the bottom you chose: with the auto lock bottom glue the two hatched triangles to their side flaps, and the bottom forms each time the tube opens.

Fill the box, fold the two roof slopes over and stand the handle panels up back to back. Bend each gable out a little at its fold and push the two ears through its slot. The template gable box holds shut with no glue, and it opens again the same way.

The tube forms, the bottom locks, the roof closes and the handle panels stand up.

The parts of a gable box template

A gable box is a tube of four walls with a roof on top. The back and the front each carry a roof slope and a handle panel; the two sides carry the gables, the triangles that close the ends under the roof. A glue flap on the back closes the tube, and the bottom flaps close the floor.

The gables stay in the side walls’ plane and their slopes sit two boards under the roof, so the roof rests on them. At each gable’s peak a narrow tower holds the slot for the handle panels’ ears.

Which bottom should I choose?

The auto lock bottom is the quickest to use: once its two triangles are glued, the box opens with its bottom already closed, and it holds the most weight. The 1-2-3 bottom needs no glue on the bottom at all and folds in three steps. The tuck bottom is the simplest to cut by hand and opens from below.

All three come in the same gable box template, and the Math tab shows every flap size: the auto lock flaps are half the box’s width, the 1-2-3 flaps shares of it as common dielines draw them, and the tuck bottom’s closure is the width less 1.5 mm plus a board.

What can a gable box carry?

A gable box is carried by its handle, so the board decides how much it holds. On 18 pt SBS a gable box template makes a box for up to about 2 lb; on 24 pt with a rounded handle hole, about 3 lb. Heavier goods take a sturdier box.

The handle hole is 0.4 of the box’s length, at least 3 in so a hand fits, and at most the length less 1 in. On a short box the hole is narrower and two or three fingers carry it; the Checks tab says so.

From the home printer to the print shop

The print shop PDF has a 1/8 in (3.175 mm) bleed following every cut line, a safe area, the glue areas free of ink, spot colors set to overprint and a notes page with the sizes. The gable box template also downloads as an SVG for a cutting machine, with named cut and score lines, as a DXF and as a PNG.

The print PDF is for a home printer at actual size, with the folding steps in front. The mini box prints whole on Letter or A4; the 4 × 2 1/2 × 2 1/2 and 3 × 3 × 3 in boxes print whole on 11 × 17 in or A3, and larger boxes are split over pages to tape together.

A print shop’s file: the artwork runs 0.13 in past every cut line.

Is this gable box template free?

Yes. Every size, every bottom and every file is a free gable box template, with no signup and no watermark. Save the box in this browser, in a project file or in a free account, and come back to change it.

For other shapes, the dieline generator draws tuck end boxes, boxes with lids, mailer boxes and bags, the gift box template sizes boxes by the gift, and all box templates are in one library.

Gable box template FAQ

More questions? The Checks and Math tabs in the tool explain the roof, the lock, each bottom and what the box carries.

Open the gable box template

Is this gable box template free?

Yes. Every size, bottom and file is free, with no signup and no watermark. Save the box in this browser, in a project file or in a free account.

What sizes does the gable box template come in?

7 ready sizes: 6 × 4 × 4 in, a 2 1/2 × 2 × 2 in mini, a 4 × 2 1/2 × 2 1/2 in favor box, a 3 × 3 × 3 in square box, an 8 × 5 × 4 in bakery box, 9 × 6 × 6 in and 10 × 7 × 5 in. Type any other size in inches or millimeters.

How does the top close without glue?

Each handle panel has an ear at both ends. Stand the two panels back to back, bend a gable out a little and push both ears through the slot in its tower; the top locks and opens again.

Which bottom is strongest?

The auto lock bottom, glued at two triangles, holds the most and forms by itself as the box opens. The 1-2-3 bottom needs no glue, and the tuck bottom is the simplest to cut by hand.

Can I print a gable box template on Letter paper?

The 2 1/2 × 2 × 2 in mini prints whole on one Letter or A4 page. The favor and square boxes print whole on 11 × 17 in or A3, and larger boxes are split over Letter pages to tape together or made by a print shop.

Can I add a window?

Yes. Switch Window on in the Gable box section: the window is cut from the front panel at least 1/2 in from every crease, and you can move or resize it. Cover it with clear film from inside.

Can I change the roof and the handle?

Yes. Type the roof height from the eave to the ridge, the handle panel’s height and the handle hole’s width and height. The template gable box redraws the roof, the gables and the lock to match.

What paper or board should I use?

18 pt SBS is what the boxes are drawn for, up to about 2 lb by the handle; 24 pt carries about 3 lb. 80 lb card stock makes a small favor box at home.

Can I cut a gable box on a cutting machine?

Yes. The SVG keeps the box as one closed cut line with its score lines. The mini box fits a 12 × 12 in mat; the 6 × 4 × 4, favor and square boxes take a 12 × 24 in mat.
