A pillow box template drawn from your size

Every pillow box template here is worked out from the size you type, so the curves meet, the flaps close and your gift fits.

Each end crease bows half the depth into the panel, and the cut mirrors it, so the end flap is twice as deep.

Curved creases worked out from the depth

Each end crease is a circular arc that bows half the depth into its panel, and the cut mirrors it, so each end flap reaches the other panel and the ends close flat. The Math tab shows the bow, the radius, the end angle and the panel width for your size.

A thumb notch on the front flaps

A half circle 3/4 in across sits in the middle of each front end flap, so a thumb opens the box without tearing it. Make it smaller or larger, or set 0 for none, under Ends and glue.

Know what fits inside

The size hint and the Math tab give the largest flat card the pillow box template holds, the inside depth in the middle, the widest item half that thick and the volume. The 5.5 × 3.5 in box holds a 4.2 × 3.4 in card.

  • Glue flap0.5 in
  • Ends cut back0.37 in

The glue flap’s ends follow the end creases, so it never catches a flap.

A glue flap that stays clear

The glue flap is 1/2 in wide unless you change it, and its ends are cut back along the end creases, so glued inside the front it never catches a flap when you tuck the ends in.

What size pillow box template do I need?

Lay what goes inside on the table and measure it. The box’s length is end to end, between the corners where the curved ends meet the sides; the width is across, between the side folds; the depth is the thickest part, in the middle.

Inside, the ends curve in, so a flat card can be just under the length of the box less its depth. The table lists every ready size with the largest flat card it holds and its flat sheet. For a size of your own, type it in inches or millimeters and the free pillow box template draws the box from there.

How the depth shapes the curves

A pillow box’s panels bend into arches, and each end flap is its panel folded back on itself. Each end crease bows into its panel exactly as far as the closed box stands off its middle, half the depth less half a board, so the depth alone sets the curve.

Where a crease meets the corners it slopes at most 45°; steeper, the end flaps could not stand up to close. That holds the depth to about half the width: a 3.5 in wide pillow box template goes up to 1.7 in deep, and deeper sizes are drawn at that depth with a note in the Checks tab.

How to fold a pillow box

Score every dashed line with a bone folder or an empty ballpoint pen, guiding it along the curves slowly. Fold along the straight creases, put glue on the glue flap and press it inside the front, so the pillow box lies flat like a sleeve.

Squeeze the sides so the panels bow out. At each end, push the back flap in along its curve first, then fold the front flap over it; the two flaps meet the far panel and close the end.

The side seam glues into a flat tube, the tube opens into arches and the end flaps fold in along the curves.

The parts of a pillow box template

A pillow box is one piece: a front and a back panel with a lens-shaped end flap at each end of each, and a glue flap along one side. On the pillow box template the front lies on top, the back below it and the glue flap at the bottom.

The front’s end flaps carry the thumb notches and close outside, so they show; the back’s end flaps tuck in under them. Every panel name and size is on the flat sheet.

Which card stock works for curved creases?

Curved creases bend best in card that is not too thick. 65 lb card stock, about 0.22 mm, prints on a home printer and curves smoothly, and 80 lb card is a little stiffer for a box that travels.

A print shop uses 14 to 18 pt board for pillow boxes. Board over about 0.5 mm makes the Checks tab suggest scoring each curve twice, so the curves fold without cracking.

From the home printer to the print shop

The print PDF is for a home printer at actual size, with the folding steps in front. A pillow box that fits the page prints whole, and a larger one prints over pages to tape together. The print shop PDF has a 1/8 in (3.175 mm) bleed following every cut line, the curves too, a safe area, the glue flap free of ink and a notes page with the sizes.

The pillow box template also downloads as an SVG for a cutting machine, with named cut and score lines and the curved scores as smooth curves, as a DXF and as a PNG. Every ready size fits a 12 × 12 in mat.

A print shop’s file: the artwork runs 0.13 in past every cut line, the curves too.

Is this pillow box template free?

Yes. Every size, every curve and every file is a free pillow box template, with no signup and no watermark. Save the box in this browser, in a project file or in a free account, and come back to change it.

For other shapes, the dieline generator draws tuck end boxes, boxes with lids, mailer boxes and bags, the hexagon box template makes a hexagon box with a lid, and all box templates are in one library.

Design your pillow box with AI

After a download, Design with AI opens AI packaging design in Auto mode: describe the colors, the pattern and the words, then place the result on the front, the back or the end flaps in the Design section.

You pay only for the designs you receive. For a logo, a name or a label, the Design section adds them right on this pillow box template, and the 3D view bends them with the panels.

Pillow box template FAQ

More questions? The Checks and Math tabs in the tool explain every size, the curves and what fits.

Open the pillow box template

Is this pillow box template free?

Yes. Every size, curve and file is free, with no signup and no watermark. Save the box in this browser, in a project file or in a free account.

What sizes does the pillow box template come in?

7 ready sizes, outside length × width × depth: 5.5 × 3.5 × 1.25 in, a 3.5 × 2.5 × 1 in mini, a 4.75 × 3 × 1 in gift card box, a 6 × 4 × 1.5 in classic box, a 6 × 4.5 × 1.75 in soap box, an 8 × 3 × 1 in long box and a 9 × 5 × 1.75 in large box. Type any other size in inches or millimeters.

How is the curve worked out?

From the depth: each end crease is a circular arc bowing half the depth into its panel, and the cut mirrors it. The Math tab shows the bow, the radius, the end angle and the panel width.

How deep can a pillow box be?

About half its width. The end creases slope at most 45° where they meet the corners, the steepest that still closes; deeper sizes are drawn at that depth.

Will a gift card fit?

Yes, in the gift card box: it holds a 3 3/8 × 2 1/8 in card. The size hint gives the largest flat card each box holds.

Can I print a pillow box template on Letter paper?

The 5.5 × 3.5 in gift box, the mini, the gift card box and the long box print whole on one Letter or A4 page. The classic and soap boxes print whole on 11 × 17 in or A3.

Do I need glue?

Only on the side seam: the glue flap goes inside the front. The ends tuck in without glue, so the box opens and closes again.

What paper or board should I use?

65 lb card stock is what the boxes are drawn for, and it curves smoothly from a home printer. 80 lb card is stiffer, and a print shop uses 14 to 18 pt board.

Can I cut a pillow box on a cutting machine?

Yes. The SVG keeps the box as one closed cut line with its score lines, the curves as smooth curves. Every ready size fits a 12 × 12 in mat.
